Expert Tips to Hang Dry Clothes

Traditional dryers can be harsh on clothes, besides being noisy. Did you know that hanging clothes to dry comes with its own benefits? Active wear and delicate fabrics can lose shape when dumped in a regular dryer. Instead, install a clothesline to neatly line up and hang your clothes to naturally dry them and maintain their form. Here are some techniques and tips to keep in mind when hanging your clothes.

Airflow

Ensure your clothes receive enough ventilation to avoid musty odours caused by speed-drying. The process must be slow, and the environment must be free from moisture. You can use a clothesline in the yard or open a window and start the fan if your line is inside a room. Remove excess moisture from the air using a dehumidifier.

Spacing Clothes

Don’t overcrowd the clothes on the line. Instead, leave some space between each garment – that way they won’t lead to mildew or bad smells. Spread the clothes out on a drying rack or, as mentioned earlier, on a clothesline.

Prep your clothes

Before hanging them out to dry, prep them – put them through an extra spin cycle to remove any excess water. Also, shake them out prior to hanging them.

Weather

Choose a breezy spot to dry your clothes – alternatively, when drying your clothes indoors, use a fan or open the window. Clothes tend to dry faster with enough sunlight and wind.

Airer

If it’s too cold and wet outside, dry your laundry using a heated airer. They consume less energy and accomplish the task. It can dry both delicate and bulky clothes.

Hanging various types of clothing

Pants: upside down – clothespins should be on the inner seams of the pants

Socks: upside down – pins go at the opposite ends of the hem at the bottom

Shirts: Tops and shirts also go upside down, and pins are at the bottom hem

Linens: Fold them in half and pin them at each end

To get the best results out of hang drying your clothes, always start in the morning. They need to hang for a while before they dry up fully. Since towels absorb a lot of water, blot them before drying. Always hang the largest item first, and as soon as the laundry dries up, remove it from the line.
