Denim has come a long way from its origins as Serge de Nîmes in France to evolving into the most preferred fabric for casual and, often, formal wear. This blue-indigo fabric has shone its best over the years since the mid-19th century. Denims make you feel amazing, especially if they are a pair of jeans. As rugged as the fabric might seem, like everything else, it must be taken care of, even as it gets better with age.
What should you do to take care of your denims?
Avoid washing them
Don’t wash them too often. Ironic but true. Wash them less to retain their authenticity. You could probably wash them once every 10 wears, for instance. If you notice stains, take a mild soap, apply it on the spot, then use a toothbrush or a cloth to wipe it off.
Don’t use hot water
Using hot water can be detrimental to denim. It is important to wash them gently in cold water. Rigorous washing can stretch the fabric, and that beautiful shade of blue just fades away. Turn your denim clothes inside out and then either hand wash or use the ‘delicate setting’ on your washing machine. Try using the kitchen sink to wash the fabric slowly and gently.
Air drying
Passing your denim through a high-heat dryer can damage the fabric. It breaks down, shrinks, and even warps. Therefore, air dry them on a clothesline once you are done washing. Use a shady area instead of directly exposing the garment to UV rays. Indigo-blue jeans could turn light and faded due to the sun.
